Meet The Supplier - Ruby and Marz Cakes (Part 1)
Let me introduce you to the power couple that is Ruby and Marz. This husband and wife team have been creating wedding cakes for the last few years. I love meeting with suppliers and finding out about their story and what led them to the Asian wedding industry.
I had the opportunity to sit with them in their home and find out more about their relaunch and of course get to taste some of the cakes for myself!
Before entering the Asian wedding industry Ruby and Marz were living in the Middle East in a compound where they began to sell cupcakes, which became very popular. On return to the UK, the couple decided to go into the wedding market. Ruby completed her cake course in UK and after the birth of their daughter, their business took off with them securing bookings for Asian weddings.
They explain further their drive and passion to just do it!
What made you want to bake cakes?
We love baking and always try to get the flavour just right, which comes with practice. We started growing our interest in baking by baking cupcakes for our cousin’s engagement party. We enjoyed it so much that we just knew we had to do more with this passion for baking. We truly enjoy baking and can get quite competitive with one another. We both know well what our strengths are, therefore Marz does all the baking and Ruby decorates the cakes.
What is the favourite flavour for cakes?
Our most popular cake flavour is the coconut crush, which is a delicate coconut sponge with coconut buttercream. But now there is a big demand for our pistachio cake. Pistachio sponge with rose water buttercream and white chocolate; this is very popular with Arabian brides. Everyone enjoys these flavours throughout the generations. We do like to experiment with flavours as well as classics.
What makes Ruby and Marz Cakes stand out?
We provide excellent customer service to couples. We make sure communication is key when working with couples; to give them answers as soon as we can. We know from our own experience how some suppliers don’t get back to you and it can be very frustrating. We try to cater to couples within their budget. No matter what, we make sure the cakes are always top quality and finished to precision. We put a lot of effort into the finishing of the cake, so couples get the cake they desire; it looks good and tastes delicious.
What made you rebrand your business?
Since we found our brand was becoming popular we have been putting a lot more time into the business, as we both have full time jobs alongside our company. Since last summer we have been baking many large cakes and more clients are approaching us. We both felt this was the right time to rebrand as we have learnt so much and would be able to reach out to the right clientele.
Our branding before was very cute and we found ‘Baked by Ruby and Marz’ too much of a mouthful to say. We made the decision to invest more in branding. We hired Bell to do our branding and Peek Agency did our website. Our official relaunch will be at the National Asian Wedding Show.
Do you cover all of the UK and do you do destination weddings?
Yes, we do. We recently went to the midlands to deliver and set up a wedding cake. We are happy to travel to brides across the UK. We also do destination weddings and it’s something we are hoping to do more of in the future.
What message(s) do you have for the brides planning their wedding?
Brides, the key is to get organised. Book as early as you can so that you can avoid being disappointed. Also, be realistic on budget and invest in the cake!
Stay tuned for part 2 of the interview, with this beautiful couple, where you’ll hear all about Marzan and Rubina’s wedding story and more…
